U.S. Rep. Dan Boren Announces College TRIO Grants

Boren says grants will help students succeed in college

WASHINGTON D.CRepresentative Dan Boren today announced TRIO grant awards totaling $2,873,833 to Eastern Oklahoma colleges and universities.  In all, eleven higher education institutions in the 2nd District will receive the grants to fund the Student Support Services Program (SSS) – a TRIO Program aimed at student support and development.

The program provides opportunities for academic development, assists students with basic college requirements, and serves to motivate students towards the successful completion of their college education.  The program also provides grant aid to current SSS participants who are receiving Federal Pell Grants.

Services provided by the program include:

  • Tutoring and instruction in reading, writing, mathematics, and study skills
  • Academic, financial, or personal counseling
  • Assistance to transitional students in securing admission and financial aid
  • Activities to acquaint students with available career options
  • Special services for students with limited English proficiency

“These grant programs are designed to help students succeed in college,” said Boren.

“We are extremely pleased to see these federal dollars come back to Oklahoma for higher education.  This investment in our students is an investment in Oklahoma’s future,” Boren said.

“TRIO programs are a valuable asset to the students and to the campus community.  For students to grow, they need positive support, reinforcement and a safe place where others will focus on their individual needs,” Boren added.

The Student Support Services program has been successful in increasing retention and graduation rates at Oklahoma colleges and universities - focusing heavily on easing the transition of students from one level of higher education to the next.
