Rep. Boren Votes To Correct Shortage In VA Health Care

WASHINGTON D.C - Yesterday, U.S. Representative Dan Boren voted to correct a $1 billion shortfall in veterans’ health care funding.  The budget shortfall was acknowledged by the Veteran’s Administration last week.

The shortfall was expected to be about $1 billion in the current fiscal year, and could reach $2.7 billion in FY 2006. The measure passed by the House provided $975 million in supplemental appropriations to help make up the shortage in medical services for veterans.

“As we approach this Fourth of July, we should remember that the courage and sacrifice of our veterans has kept our nation free. This shortfall in veteran health care is a dishonor to their sacrifice and is a disservice to those who currently wear the uniform,” Boren said.

Medical Centers within the Veterans Integrated Service Network including Oklahoma, Arkansas, Mississippi and Louisiana and part of Texas, have stopped scheduling appointments for many veterans who are eligible for care, pending available resources.

“Veterans in my district are experiencing long delays in scheduling appointments and some are even being turned away,” Boren explained.

In a letter to President Bush dated June 28, 2005, Boren urged the Administration to “submit veterans’ budgets that more accurately reflect the resource requirements of the Department of Veteran’s Affairs and the health care needs of current veterans.”

The letter also addressed the needs of veterans returning from the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.  “At a time of war, funding for veterans must be made a clear and unmistakable priority,” Boren said.

Chairman Larry Craig of the Senate Committee on Veterans Affairs anticipates that the Senate will quickly take up the measure for expedited passage.
