BOREN SECURES $400,000 FOR TRIBAL LAW ENFORCEMENT PROJECTS

WASHINGTON D.C. - U.S. Representative Dan Boren announced today that he has secured $400,000 for the United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee’s (UKB) tribal law enforcement projects. The funding was part of the Commerce, Justice, and Science Appropriations Act for Fiscal Year 2008 which passed the House this week. The UKB tribe was awarded $250,000 to upgrade police technology and law enforcement equipment for the tribe’s Light Horse Patrol. The tribe was also awarded $150,000 to enhance existing domestic violence and victim’s assistance programs.

“I am pleased that we were able to secure funding for these projects. These awards will provide assistance to these very important law enforcement and social service programs,” Boren said. “I will continue to work for this critical funding that helps keep Oklahoman’s safe, and allows the tribe to improve upon the services they offer.

The focus of these projects will be in the rural areas that service the communities of the UKB tribal members as well as non-tribal members that live in the tribe’s jurisdictional area.

“This announcement is great news for UKB tribal members. These programs are very important both in keeping our tribal members safe, and in providing a safety net for victims’ needs,” said Chief George Wickliffe of the UKB tribe.
