WASHINGTON D.C. - U.S. Congressman Dan Boren was joined by the Oklahoma Congressional delegation today in requesting the federal government's immediate approval of Oklahoma Governor Brad Henry's major disaster declaration. In a letter to President Bush, Boren emphasized the importance of individual assistance for Oklahoma's flood victims.
"As many as 800 homes were damaged by flood waters in the counties listed in the disaster declaration. Thousands of Oklahomans will return to face terrible property losses. Whether it's a home, farm, or business, it's imperative that the federal government provide the assistance to help these people make repairs and get back on their feet," Boren said.
Boren highlighted the significant financial burden many city and county governments across the impacted areas have incurred as they have responded to and continue to respond to the crisis. The Congressman's letter also requested the Administration's quick approval for any counties the Governor may seek to add to the declaration when damage assessments have been fully completed.
"The expense to affected communities will be astronomical as they begin the recovery and repair phase of their response," Boren said. Assessing damages will continue possibly for many weeks - and Boren insists that every community be thoroughly inspected.
Boren personally surveyed flood damage Wednesday from land and air. He was accompanied by FEMA representative Derek Shackelford, OEM Deputy Director Fred Liebe, and Small Business Administration representative Ron Hayes.
