WASHINGTON D.C. - U.S. Representative Dan Boren issued the following statement regarding the administration’s Fiscal Year 2009 budget proposal:
“As a fiscal conservative, I am in full support of cutting wasteful and outdated programs from the budget. We must attempt to balance the budget rather than passing debt to future Oklahomans. However, the President's proposed cuts to the Byrne Justice Assistance Grants and the Assistance to Firefighters Grants are unacceptable. These programs provide our local law enforcement and emergency responders with the critical resources they need to fight against the spread of methamphetamine and wildfires. Under the President's budget, Oklahoma would lose over $2.2 million in Justice Assistance grants which could fund up to 70 police officers. Oklahoma would also stand to lose over $10 million in fire grants which would cause some 114 fire stations to not receive assistance. Trying to save money by cutting funds to law enforcement and emergency services is simply not the answer.”
