Statement on 12th anniversary
of Oklahoma City bombing

WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Congressman Dan Boren today joined Vice President Dick Cheney, members of the Oklahoma congressional delegation and Oklahoma City Mayor Mick Cornett on the south lawn of the White House to commemorate the 12th anniversary of the Oklahoma City bombing.  A moment of silence was observed for the 168 innocent men, women and children who lost their lives at the Murrah Federal Building on the morning of April 19, 1995.  Boren issued the following statement:

“Oklahomans will not soon forget the worst domestic terrorist attack in our nation’s history.  The Oklahoma City bombing has been a defining moment of the past 12 years and will forever be a part of our state’s history.  My thoughts and prayers are with all the families in Oklahoma and across the nation affected by this senseless act.

“In the 12 years since the Oklahoma City bombing our state has been healing.  This is a great testament to the resilience of Oklahomans and all Americans who offered their support.  Oklahoma could have given up in the aftermath of the bombing, but instead became emboldened to face the challenges ahead.

Oklahoma is not alone in confronting tragedy.  Just this week came another reminder that it often strikes when we least expect it.  I join with all Oklahomans in offering my condolences to the Virginia Tech community for the 33 lives lost on Monday.

“Tragedy often brings us together.  As Virginians move forward in the wake of this week’s tragedy, Oklahomans will be there, just as they were for us 12 years ago.”
