Boren statement on the execution
of Saddam Hussein

WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Congressman Dan Boren, a member of the House Armed Services Committee, released the following statement regarding the execution of Saddam Hussein:

“Saddam Hussein’s execution brings an end to a dark chapter in Iraq’s history.  For decades the tyrannical dictator ruled by instilling fear in the Iraqi people and his neighbors in the Middle East.  The new Iraqi government can finally move forward rebuilding the country, out of the shadow of Saddam’s authoritarian regime.

“Saddam’s trial, sentencing and execution by the new Iraqi government are the best signs yet of democracy at work in Iraq.  During his reign, Saddam tortured and murdered thousands of people without the bother of the public trial or appeals process afforded to him.  Democracy doesn’t happen over night, but this is a sign of progress.

“I am hopeful that by putting Saddam Hussein behind them, the Iraqi government will emerge stronger and better able to address the political, religious and security challenges facing the country.  We do not yet know the impact the execution will have on the sectarian violence plaguing Iraq.  But I have no doubt that Iraq and the world are better off without Saddam Hussein.”
