BOREN STATEMENT ON IRAQ

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Following President Bush’s news conference this morning regarding U.S. policy in Iraq, Congressman Boren released the following statement:

“Though he has changed his rhetoric, the President has so far failed to address repeated calls for a significant strategy change in Iraq.

"I hope today's acknowledgement that he is not satisfied with the situation is a sign the President is considering a policy shift as we continue to fight a war that has changed dramatically in three years.

“Every American wants to see our men and women in uniform back on American soil as soon as possible.  But I agree with the President that we now have a responsibility to Iraq and the world to ensure we not abandon Iraq before it is able to provide for its own security.  Benchmarks have been announced for the Iraqi government and meeting those goals should correspond to the redeployment of U.S. troops."
