WASHINGTON D.C. - U.S. Congressman Dan Boren signed a “discharge petition” this week to require a vote on a measure that would change U.S. House of Representative rules to require that legislation be posted for 72 hours online before a vote is taken.
A discharge petition is a means of bringing a bill out of Committee and to the House floor for consideration without a report from a Committee. If 218 Congressmen sign the document before the end of the year, it would force a House vote on the bill.
“I believe it is critical that everyone, whether they are constituents, the press, or other interested parties, have sufficient time to review legislation before it is voted on. We should be working to promote transparency in the House, especially while we debate legislation to address some of most pressing problems our nation has faced in decades,” Boren said.
Boren was one of five Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives to sign the discharge petition which as of Friday afternoon contained 178 signatures.
