BOREN VOTES TO RECOGNIZE WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH; INTRODUCES LEGISLATION HONORING LOCAL WOMAN

WASHINGTON D.C. - U.S. Congressman Dan Boren today joined a unanimous vote in the U.S. House of Representatives to celebrate women’s historic achievements and to acknowledge the month of March as National Women’s History Month.

“It is important to celebrate the achievements and contributions that women have made to our society.  Each of us has at least one woman in our life that supported us or gave us advice that shaped us forever – whether it was your mother, another family member, a teacher, a coach, or some other role model.  In Oklahoma, we are blessed to have several women holding local, county, and statewide leadership positions, and they set a wonderful example for young women in Oklahoma to follow.”

In celebration of Women’s History Month, Congressman Boren introduced legislation today honoring the late, Ms. Lois Burton, of the Choctaw Nation for the outstanding example she set for Oklahoma women and all Oklahomans.  Ms. Burton’s dedication to the Choctaw Nation, to the State of Oklahoma, and to the improvement of health care and education services in our state is to be highly commended.

“I am proud to bring special distinction to Ms. Lois Burton as an example of someone whose selflessness, hard-work, and dedication on a daily basis had a positive impact on thousands of Oklahomans.  Her contribution to the education of Oklahoma’s young people and her work to improve health care services in eastern Oklahoma deserves this special recognition.  It is an honor to make Ms. Burton the first woman selected by my office for such acknowledgment.  I hope to make this effort a tradition by selecting another woman from the Second Congressional District each National Women’s History Month that I serve in the U.S. Congress.”

Following is a transcript of the House Resolution that Boren introduced:

Honoring Ms. Lois Burton for setting an example for all women through her influence and dedication to the Choctaw Nation and to improved health care and education in honor of Women’s History Month.

Whereas Lois Burton was committed to the education and excellence of the students of Eastern Oklahoma through her service on the Jones Academy Board of Education;

Whereas Ms. Burton was a dedicated advocate of improved health care evident through her work with the Health Clinic of Poteau, Oklahoma, her service to the Board of the Choctaw Nation Hospital and her work to establish the Pharmacy Refill Center at the Health Clinic in Poteau, Oklahoma;

Whereas Ms. Burton was devoted to the Choctaw Nation; named Outstanding Elder of the Choctaw Nation in 2002 and served as a Tribal Judge.

Whereas the life of Ms. Burton continues to influence and impact the lives of Choctaw women and Oklahoma women:

Now, therefore, be it

Resolved, that the House of Representatives

1.  Honors Lois Burton as an extraordinary example for all women in recognition of Women’s History Month;

2.  Commends Lois Burton for her dedication to the Choctaw Nation; and
